A permit to scatter the ashes
The person arranging the burial applies to the County Administrative Board (Länsstyrelsen) for a permit. Funeral directors often help with this.

Burial at sea is allowed in Sweden, but ashes can't be scattered just anywhere. After the death, you apply for a permit from the County Administrative Board, usually through its online service. In the application you state, among other things, where the ashes will be scattered. Once the ashes have been scattered, you confirm this to the County Administrative Board.

The ashes can be scattered directly on the water or lowered into the sea in a special water-soluble urn. This kind of urn is made from materials that dissolve in water, such as salt, sand or cellulose.
An ordinary urn made of metal, stone or plastic must not be lowered into the sea. Ask your funeral director for an urn that is approved for burial at sea.
Many people choose to scatter flowers or loose petals on the water once the ashes have been released. It is a gentle moment in which everyone can take part and say goodbye in their own way.
If you can, choose natural flowers without plastic, ribbon or wire, so that nothing is left behind in the sea. And remember not to mark the spot.
We allow plenty of time and plan the day around you. The skipper knows the archipelago well and will find a quiet spot where you can gather undisturbed.
Play a much-loved song, read a poem, or let the silence and the sea speak for themselves. You decide how the farewell should feel.
Your family and friends travel with you on the boat. If you would like a priest or celebrant, you can arrange this with your funeral director.
We leave from Vaxholm and can pick up your party from a jetty in the archipelago – near a summer house, for example.
The price depends on how long the boat is out, how far into the archipelago you'd like to go and how many people are coming. Call us and we'll give you a price for your burial at sea. Your funeral director's own services, and any permit, are not included.
That depends on the boat and the weather. Let us know how many of you there will be when you get in touch, and we'll plan the trip around that.
Safety on board always comes first. If the weather doesn't allow for a calm, safe ceremony, we'll agree on another day with you. The sea is often at its calmest in the morning.
No, but many people find it reassuring. A funeral director can help with the permit, a water-soluble urn and contact with the crematorium. We're happy to work with whichever funeral director you've chosen.
